Hard Landscaping

Close Board & Feather Edge Fencing

Close board fencing is built in place: posts set in concrete, rails fixed between them, then overlapping feather edge boards nailed to the rails. It is stronger than panel fencing and can follow a sloping garden without stepping down in blocks. A gravel board along the bottom keeps the boards off the soil, so the timber lasts longer and the bottom board can be replaced on its own.

Recent jobs include close board runs on concrete posts and gravel boards, finished with a five-bar field gate across the entrance.

Fencing

Panel & Picket Fencing

Panel fencing slots into concrete posts, which do not rot, and a damaged panel can be swapped out without disturbing the posts. Picket fencing suits front gardens where you want a clear boundary without blocking the view, and it can be kept under the 1 metre height that applies beside a road.

Fencing

Timber Gates

From a garden side gate to a five-bar gate across a drive, each gate is hung on posts sized for its weight, with hinges and a latch to match. A heavy field gate needs a substantial post set deep in concrete, otherwise it drops and drags on the ground.

How the Job Runs

Your Fencing Step by Step

  1. Survey & Boundary Check

We measure the run, note slopes and obstacles, and confirm with you where the fence line sits.

  2. Clearing the Line

Old fencing, roots and any broken concrete are cleared so the new posts go in on a clean line.

  3. Posts & Rails

Posts are set in concrete to line and level, then rails or panels go in once the concrete has gone off.

  4. Boards, Gates & Finish

Boards are fixed, gates hung and adjusted, and the waste is taken away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fencing: Your Questions Answered

Should I choose concrete or timber posts?

Concrete posts do not rot and suit panel fencing well. Timber posts look more natural with close board and can be cut to follow the ground. Either way, the posts are set in concrete.

How high can my fence be?

A fence up to 2 metres high generally needs no planning permission, or up to 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings and conservation areas can have extra rules.

Who is responsible for a boundary fence?

Your deeds may show which boundaries are yours. If the fence is shared, it is worth agreeing the work with your neighbour before we start.

What types of fencing do you install?

Panel fencing, closeboard and post and rail, on timber or concrete posts with gravel boards to keep the timber off the ground. We talk through privacy, wind exposure and upkeep before you choose.

Can you replace an old fence and keep the posts?

Sometimes. Sound concrete posts can take new panels, but rotten timber posts or ones that have moved need replacing, otherwise the new fence will lean with them.
