Patios

Why Choose SE Groundworks?

A patio is extra living space, so we start with how you want to use it: somewhere to eat, a sunny corner to sit in, or a link between the house and the rest of the garden. We advise on size, shape and material so it suits the house and gets the light when you will use it.

We are a family run firm with over 20 years in groundworks, so the digging, levels and drainage are handled by the same people who lay the stone. Our reviews mention the tidy finish, and you have one point of contact from quote to completion.

Patios & Paths

Quality You Can Depend On

Patios are laid with a fall away from the house so rain runs off rather than towards your walls, and finished below the damp-proof course. Slabs go down on a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base, which stops rocking and the hollow spots that let water in.

Choose from sandstone, granite, limestone, slate, porcelain, concrete flags or block paving, in clean modern lines or traditional patterned layouts. Paths and steps are built the same way, with edging that keeps them crisp and steps set at even, comfortable heights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patios & Paths: Your Questions Answered

Which is better, natural stone or porcelain?

Natural stone has variation and character and weathers in over time. Porcelain is dense, consistent and easy to clean, but needs careful cutting and a specialist primer to bond. Both last well when laid correctly, so it comes down to the look you want and the upkeep you are happy with.

Does a patio need drainage?

Every patio needs a fall so water runs off. Where it meets the house at a tight level, or runs towards a wall, a channel drain or soakaway may be needed as well.

Can you build paths and steps at the same time?

Yes. Building them together means the materials and levels match, and the garden is only disturbed once.

What base does a patio need?

A compacted sub-base, then a full mortar bed under every slab. Laying slabs on a few spots of mortar leaves hollows that crack and rock, so we bed them fully and set a gentle fall so rain runs off.

Can a patio be laid right up to the house?

Yes, as long as it sits below the damp proof course and falls away from the walls. We set the levels so water drains to the garden or a channel rather than towards the house.
