Affordable Tarmac Driveways in Kent

Tarmac is one of the most cost-effective ways to surface a driveway, and it copes well with cars turning and heavier vehicles. The same team surfaces roads, car parks and private roads across Kent, so your drive gets the same attention to levels and compaction.

A new tarmac drive is built in layers: a compacted crushed stone sub-base, a binder course, then a finer surface course rolled smooth while it is hot. Falls are set so water runs to a drain, channel or soft border rather than towards your house.

About Us

Our Experience with Tarmac Driveways

We are a family run groundworks business based in Staplehurst, and we bring over 20 years of experience to every tarmac driveways job across Kent, East and West Sussex and south-east London.

The same small, friendly team surveys the job, prepares the ground and finishes the surface, so you deal with the people doing the work from the first visit to the final sweep.

We have worked on behalf of Kent County Council and utility companies, our team is registered with the Street Works Qualifications Register, and we are approved under the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme.

Quality You Can Depend On

The edges are where tarmac drives usually fail first, so we finish them with kerbs, granite setts or a block paving border bedded in concrete. A paving apron at the entrance or a contrasting border can lift the look of a plain drive.

If your existing tarmac is sound but tired, a new surface course can be a cheaper option than starting again. Where the base has failed, with spreading cracks or dips that hold water, we dig out and rebuild rather than covering the problem.

How the Job Runs

Your Tarmac Driveways Step by Step

  1. Survey & Quote

We check the existing drive, the levels and where water collects, and recommend a new drive or a resurface.

  2. Preparation

The old surface is broken out and removed, and the sub-base is built up and compacted, or the existing base is repaired for a resurface.

  3. Edging

Kerbs, setts or a block border are bedded in concrete so the tarmac has a firm edge to work against.

  4. Laying & Rolling

The binder and surface courses are laid hot and rolled to a smooth, even finish, then the site is cleared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tarmac Driveways: Your Questions Answered

How soon can I use a new tarmac drive?

You can usually walk on it soon after it is laid, and we will tell you when it is ready to park on. In hot weather, avoid turning the steering wheel while the car is stationary for the first few weeks, as fresh tarmac can scuff.

Can you resurface my existing tarmac drive?

If the base is sound, yes. We clean and repair the existing surface, then lay a new surface course over it. If the base is breaking up, a resurface will not last and we will say so.

Is a tarmac driveway permeable?

Standard tarmac is not, so it needs falls to a drain, channel or soft border. Porous asphalt is available where you need water to drain through the surface.

Do I need edging on a tarmac drive?

Yes. Kerbs or edging hold the tarmac in place so the edges do not crumble or spread when cars run near them. We set the edging in concrete before the tarmac goes down.

Can a tarmac drive be laid on a slope?

Yes. We set the levels so water runs away from the house and into a channel drain, a soakaway or your garden, and compact each layer so the surface holds its shape on the gradient.
