Driveways

Quality You Can Depend On

There are two ways to finish a drive in stone. A loose gravel or shingle drive has the stone spread over a membrane and compacted sub-base, held in by kerbs or block edging, with the size and colour of stone chosen to suit your house. A tar and chip drive, also called tar and gravel, has hot bitumen sprayed over a prepared base with chippings spread and rolled into it, giving the look of gravel without loose stones underfoot.

Loose gravel drains freely and is the most economical way to cover a large area, though it needs raking and occasional topping up. Angular stone locks together better than rounded pebbles and is easier to walk and wheel a bin across, and stabilising grids under the stone help stop rutting on slopes and where cars turn.

Tar and chip suits long drives, farm entrances and private lanes where you want a firm, grippy surface with a traditional look. It can also be laid over an existing tarmac drive that is sound but worn.

How the Job Runs

Your Gravel & Tar & Chip Driveways Step by Step

  1. Survey & Choice of Finish

We look at the drive, how it is used and how it drains, and help you choose between loose gravel and tar and chip.

  2. Base & Edging

The ground is dug out and a sub-base built and compacted, with edging set in concrete to contain the surface.

  3. Surfacing

For gravel, the membrane, any grids and the stone go down. For tar and chip, hot bitumen is sprayed and the chippings spread and rolled in.

  4. Finish & Clear-Up

Loose chippings are swept off, the site is cleared and we explain any upkeep the surface needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gravel & Tar & Chip Driveways: Your Questions Answered

What is the difference between gravel and tar and chip?

A gravel drive is loose stone over a firm base. Tar and chip fixes the stone into a layer of hot bitumen, so it looks similar but stays put and does not scatter onto lawns or the road.

Will a gravel drive rut?

Gravel ruts when the base is soft or the layer of stone is too thick. A well-compacted sub-base, the right depth of angular stone and stabilising grids in turning areas keep it even.

Is a gravel driveway permeable?

Yes. Rain drains through loose gravel into the base, which is one reason it suits front gardens without the need for extra drainage.

Can tar and chip go over my existing drive?

It can be laid over sound tarmac or a well-compacted stone base. Potholes and soft areas are repaired first so the new surface has a firm footing.

How do you stop gravel spreading onto the road or lawn?

Edging along the borders and a kerb or threshold strip at the entrance keep the stones where they belong. On sloping drives a stabilising grid under the gravel stops it washing downhill.
