Block Paving in Kent

Block paving suits most homes because you can choose the colour, size and laying pattern, from a simple stretcher bond to herringbone, which interlocks best where cars turn. Contrasting borders and banding can frame the drive or mark out parking spaces.

We lay block paving for domestic and commercial clients across Kent, East and West Sussex and south-east London. The method is the same on every job: dig out, membrane, a compacted sub-base and a screeded bed of sharp sand, then the blocks, cut neatly at the edges and held by a concrete haunch. Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface is compacted to lock it together.

Quality You Can Depend On

A block paved drive should stay level for years. That comes down to compacting each layer of the base properly and fitting edge restraints that stop the blocks creeping, and those are the parts we never rush.

If you want rain to soak away rather than run off, permeable block paving is an option: the joints are wider and filled with fine grit, and an open-graded sub-base lets water drain through. Existing block drives with sunken areas or broken blocks can often be lifted and relaid rather than replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Block Paving Driveways: Your Questions Answered

Will weeds grow through block paving?

Most weeds root in dirt that settles into the top of the joints rather than coming up from below, because the membrane and base stop them. Keeping the joints topped up and sweeping the drive now and then keeps them down, and our driveway cleaning service includes re-sanding if it needs a refresh.

Can you repair sunken block paving?

Yes. We lift the blocks in the affected area, find out why it sank, recompact or rebuild the base and relay the same blocks so the repair blends in.

Which laying pattern is strongest?

Herringbone, laid at 45 or 90 degrees, interlocks best and resists the twisting force of tyres turning. Stretcher and basketweave patterns look good on paths and lightly used areas.

Is block paving permeable?

Standard block paving sheds most water off the surface, so it needs falls to a drain or soft border. Permeable block paving lets water through the joints into the sub-base, which can help on front gardens where planning rules apply.

How long should block paving last?

A block paved drive laid on a properly compacted sub-base, with restrained edges and kiln dried jointing sand, lasts for many years. Most problems we are asked to fix come from a thin base or missing edging rather than the blocks themselves.
