Planning a New Driveway

Most new drives start with a question about space: how many cars, where they turn and how you get from the car to the door. We measure up, check the levels and look at where surface water will go, then suggest a layout and surface that fit the house.

Turning a front garden into parking usually means a dropped kerb as well. That needs approval from the council’s highways team, which you apply for as the homeowner, and we can help you with the application. SE Groundworks is registered with the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR).

New Driveways

Building It to Last

A new drive is dug out to a depth that suits the ground and the vehicles using it, and much of the Weald has heavy clay that needs a deeper base. We lay a membrane, build and compact the sub-base in layers, and fix kerbs or edging before the surface goes down.

Drainage is planned from the start, with channel drains, a soakaway or a permeable surface so water does not pond or run towards the house.

Choosing the Surface

Once the base is planned, the surface comes down to looks, budget and upkeep. Block paving, resin bound, tarmac and gravel all work on a new drive, and they can be combined, such as tarmac with a block paving border or resin with a brick edge.

You get one written quote covering the whole job, including dig-out, waste removal and making good, so you can see what each stage involves, including the parts that end up buried.

Frequently Asked Questions

New Driveways: Your Questions Answered

Do I need a dropped kerb for a new driveway?

If you will be driving over a pavement or verge to reach it, yes. You apply to the council’s highways team as the homeowner, and you should not drive across the kerb until it has been lowered with their approval. We can help you with the application.

Do I need planning permission to pave my front garden?

Not usually, if the new surface is permeable or drains onto your own garden. A hard surface that sends water onto the road may need permission, so we plan the drainage to avoid that where we can.

Can you widen my existing driveway?

Yes. We can extend the base and surface to the side, either matching the existing drive or adding a contrasting border so the join looks deliberate.

What is involved in building a new driveway?

The old surface or garden is dug out, a membrane goes down where the ground needs one, and a crushed stone sub-base is compacted in layers. Edging and drainage go in next, then the finished surface you have chosen.

Which surfaces can I choose from?

Block paving, resin bound, tarmac, gravel and tar and chip are all options. We talk through how each one looks, drains and wears so you can choose what suits the house and how the drive will be used.
