Choosing the Right Driveway Surface

Each surface suits a different house, budget and level of upkeep. Block paving gives you patterns and easy patch repairs, resin bound gives a smooth permeable finish, tarmac is hard-wearing and quick to lay, and gravel is the most economical way to cover a large area.

We visit, look at how the ground falls and where the water goes, and talk you through what would work on your drive before you commit to anything. If you are paving over a front garden, the surface needs to be permeable or drain onto your own ground, otherwise planning permission may be needed, and we will tell you which options avoid that.

What Goes Underneath

A driveway is only as good as the ground beneath it. We dig out to a depth that suits the soil and the vehicles using it, lay a geotextile membrane where the ground needs one, then build up a crushed stone sub-base compacted in layers. Edges are held with kerbs or a concrete haunch so the surface cannot spread.

With over 20 years in groundworks, including work on behalf of Kent County Council and utility companies, we treat the base as the main part of the job. You deal with one team from dig-out to clear-up, and we are approved under the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme.

How the Job Runs

Your Driveways Step by Step

  1. Survey & Quote

We measure the drive, check levels and drainage, and talk through surfaces with you. You get a written quote setting out what the job involves.

  2. Dig-Out & Base

The old surface and soil are removed, a membrane is laid where needed and the sub-base is built up and compacted in layers.

  3. Edging & Drainage

Kerbs or edging are set in concrete and any channel drains or soakaways go in, so water has somewhere to go before the surface is laid.

  4. Surface & Handover

The finished surface is laid, the site is cleared and swept, and we tell you when the drive is ready to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Driveways: Your Questions Answered

Which driveway surface lasts longest?

All of them last well when the base is right. Block paving and tarmac cope best with heavy vehicles and turning, resin bound needs a solid, free-draining base, and gravel needs raking and topping up now and then. We will point you to the one that suits how you use the drive.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Usually not, if the surface is permeable or drains onto your own garden. Covering a front garden with a hard surface that sheds water onto the road may need permission, and a new dropped kerb needs approval from the council’s highways team. We can explain what applies to your property.

Can a new surface go over my old driveway?

Sometimes. A sound, level tarmac or concrete base can take resin or a new tarmac surface course, but a cracked or sinking base has to be dug out first. We check it at the survey and tell you which applies.

How long will the work take?

It depends on the size of the drive, the ground conditions and the weather. Your quote includes a start date and how long we expect to be on site, and we keep you updated if the weather changes the plan.

Do you offer free quotes for driveways?

We visit, look at the ground, the levels and where the water goes, then send a written quote setting out what the job involves. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to go ahead.
