Kerbing Projects Big or Small

A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, lets you drive legally across the pavement onto your property. The footway and kerb belong to the highway authority, so its permission is needed before any work starts: in most of Kent that is Kent County Council, with Medway Council covering the Medway towns and the Sussex councils and Bromley handling their own areas. The application is made by the homeowner, and we can help you prepare it.

Once it is approved, we break out the existing kerbs, set dropped and transition kerbs on a concrete bed and rebuild the footway across the crossing with a deeper sub-base and a surface strong enough for a car. The work is on the public highway, so it is signed and guarded throughout, and our SWQR street works registration means it is carried out by qualified operatives.

The same kerbing skills go into private work. Kerbs, edging and channels around new driveways, patios and car parks keep the edges of the paving in place and send surface water where it should go.

How the Job Runs

Your Dropped Kerbs Step by Step

  1. Check & Apply

We look at your frontage and explain what the council is likely to consider, such as visibility, street trees, lamp posts and whether there is room to park without overhanging the footway. You submit the application with our help.

  2. Approval & Booking

Once the council approves the crossover and any conditions are clear, we book the work and arrange what is needed to work on the highway.

  3. Building the Crossover

Old kerbs and footway come out, the new kerbs are bedded and haunched in concrete, and the footway is rebuilt and compacted in layers.

  4. Finishing the Drive

The crossover is tied into your driveway at the right levels, the area is cleaned up and the footway is reopened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dropped Kerbs: Your Questions Answered

Do I need permission for a dropped kerb?

Yes. The highway authority has to approve a vehicle crossover before it is built. Driving over a kerb that has not been dropped can be an offence, and it can damage the pipes and cables under the footway.

Who applies to the council?

The application is made by the property owner. We can help you gather the measurements and details the council asks for, and build the crossover once it is approved.

Does my driveway need to drain on my own land?

Councils expect driveway water to drain on your property rather than run onto the road. Paving more than 5 square metres of front garden with a non-permeable surface needs planning permission unless the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway.

Can you build the driveway as well?

Yes. Building the crossover and the driveway together means the levels meet properly at the boundary and the drainage is planned as one.

How long does a dropped kerb take to install?

It depends on the width of the crossing, the footway and any services underneath. Once the council has approved the application, we agree a date and tell you how long we expect to be on site.
