Paths That Work Every Day

A good path follows the route people actually walk, from the gate to the front door or down the garden to a shed or patio. It needs to be wide enough to walk comfortably and to push a wheelbarrow or bin along, with edges that will not crumble.

We lay paths in natural stone, block paving, brick, resin bound or gravel, often matching an existing patio or driveway so the garden looks connected.

Steps Built for Safe Footing

Outdoor steps need even risers and deep enough treads so nobody misjudges them, especially in the dark or the wet. We build the risers in brick or block on a concrete footing and cap them with treads that overhang slightly and fall forward so water runs off.

Where a slope is too steep for a gentle path, a short flight of steps or a retaining wall can make the garden much easier to get around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Garden Paths & Steps: Your Questions Answered

What is the best surface for a garden path?

For a path you use every day, a firm surface such as stone, block paving or resin bound is easiest to walk and wheel things along. Gravel suits informal garden routes and drains well.

Can you make steps safer?

Yes. Rebuilding uneven steps with consistent heights, a grippy tread and a slight forward fall makes the biggest difference.

Can steps be built into a sloping garden?

Yes. We cut the steps into the slope on concrete footings, and can add low retaining walls either side to hold the soil back.

Can a path match my patio or driveway?

Yes. Using the same stone, blocks or edging ties the garden together, and we can set paths and steps out at the same time as a patio or drive so the levels line up.

Does a garden path need a base?

Yes. Even a footpath needs a compacted sub-base and edging, otherwise it settles, rocks or spreads. The depth depends on the material and how wet the ground is.
